Salisbury used to be a fantastic family town. In the post-WWII era, the economy was booming as many families relocated to enjoy the area's many employers and prosperity after the Great Depression had finally come to a close. Even during the Depression, the area didn't suffer as badly as many others in the country due to its largely agrarian culture, making it more attractive to people looking for escapes from urban areas faring much worse. After Ocean City began to thrive in the Fifties and Sixties, the town grew even more. Many of the area's younger generations returned after college life to start their families, living near all their relatives. They were the bedrock that caused the community to thrive, making even more reasons to love living in the Crossroads of Delmarva.

In recent decades, as many of you know, several companies like Dresser, Chris Craft, Crown, all left due to economic reasons and relocated to other areas, leaving the area with only a growing university and hospital along with Perdue. The area experienced a downturn and it would seem it still hasn't recovered in spite of what some are touting these days.

Looking at the data from popular sites dedicated to helping folks make decisions about where to relocate, Salisbury doesn't offer young, college-educated people the prospects many locals would love to believe. If you look at the trends, the expected increases are not enough to produce good-paying career jobs for even the kids graduating from local universities. What's a college grad or anyone of working age to do?

On the site Payscale, the median income here is hovering around $40,000 a year. Sounds like a nice amount considering most college kids have only had part-time, non-career jobs up until graduation; however, when you factor in the median rent of $1,200 a month for a two bedroom apartment, this number is reduced substantially. And young generations can kiss owning a home with the median being around $137,000 per year (also see median rent link) because unless they can save a traditional 20% down payment out of their $709.00 every two week income, they will be a long time trying to save $27,400.

Even at the highest rate listed below at $50,000, the calculations for net pay as done on the Maryland Comptroller's website, doesn't allow for people to save anything for retirement or homebuying. And we all know the rents are now skewed towards renting to college students paying $400-600 a month each in a rental home or apartment. So much for the American Dream unless you're dream is living in low income housing for the rest of your life.

Are people not expected to even eat much less save for their retirement?

When doing the calculation of the two-week pay period with only healthcare deducted, the salary is hardly enough to pay for the area rent; therefore, if a person has a car payment, student debt repayment or, God forbid, any credit card debt whatsoever, the chances of their survival here in Salisbury looks bleak.

It would seem Salisbury is not a place for young working families to come and start their adult lives unless they have parents who own companies here or are ensconced in the born-here population. Those not fortunate enough to have either, are not likely to stay in Salisbury for long because it's virtually unsustainable for them to work a career job here and enjoy their life at the same time. They would no doubt have to have a second (and possibly a third) job in depending on their family situation to even make ends meet, much less have things many take for granted like a car or pay back their school loans any time within a century.

Is this really the way to grow a community? And what happens to the Salisbury economy if people stay but are unable to afford going to local bars and restaurants? Then what? It's a trickledown situation that most are not taking into account when they put their opinions about Salisbury's economy to paper for all to see.

No matter how much gerry rigged math you have, you can't put any lipstick on this pig and the future doesn't proffer a very promising view for many area workers for this area.

What happens to Salisbury when all the retirees and folks in mid-to-late careers die off? Who will pay taxes then with all the younger generations seeking their futures in more prosperous towns and cities? Only a few in our local government are entertaining this rising dilemma but are those few enough to halt and backtrack this downward spiral? Hardly.
